TLC is Spanish for NAFTA, or North American Free Trade Agreement. The adoption was put to a national referendum. This was a smart move by the NO forces because folks here are conservative and against change. Adoption was approved by 51% to 48%. There were bumper stickers and flags everywhere for the referendum. Items: CRicans can grow rice cheaper than US farmers. However, US farm subsidies on rice allow US producers to sell below the CRican price. Import tariffs well go away, but the government will lose that income so as a consequence other taxes (on CRicans) will rise-so who benefits? (US companies). But CRica will gain US jobs for their export industries. My CRican dentist told me his group read everyword and it is a good thing for Costa Rica. Where is Ross Perot when we (US) needs him?
